SPRINT 1
Project Overview
PROJECT DUE DATE: AUGUST 24, 2018
Project outline: For this project, you’ll create a set of curriculum maps for your grade level (elementary, middle or high) connecting ANY of these areas with the arts: math, science or reading standards.
For example, you may choose to create a set of math curriculum maps for grades 6-8. Or you may choose to create a set of reading and math curriculum maps for grades 6-8. Your project can be in any format (spreadsheet, PDF, web, etc) that you wish. However, you must include the following:
• 8-10 standards alignments in any content area you choose for the grade level in which you currently teach. If you teach 3rd grade, you’ll create a set of 3rd grade maps. If you’re a high school choral teacher, you’ll create a set of maps for all grades 9-12 connecting music with any of the other content areas. Make these maps meaningful by connecting them to your current content or grade. You can select the content area and arts area alignments you wish to make.
• You can include any arts area in your maps, but do use some variety. We want to see at least 3 different art forms (visual art, music, theater, dance, media arts) included in your maps. If you can have each of the art forms represented at some point, that’s even better. If you’re an arts teacher already, you’ll want to include at least 2 other arts areas – integrating your art form with another arts area – in your maps. Remember: not everyone connects with every art form. It’s important to have variety.
• An introduction for how to use the curriculum maps.
Sample Curriculum Maps
Below is a sample E/LA curriculum map for you in grade 3 that you can use as a model.
Please note: We’re not looking for beautiful design – we’re looking for high quality. Don’t feel like you should spend a lot of time making these maps pretty. Spend your time on making sure you have fantastic natural alignments between standards.

This is what your coach will use to grade your project. You’ll want to review this and grade yourself before turning in your project to your coach. This will help ensure the best possible outcome for you.
UPLOAD YOUR PROJECT BELOW
Select your coach’s name and click on that button. You’ll then be able to upload your project directly to your coach’s dropbox folder. Upon upload, it will say “successful upload” on the screen, but will not take you to a thank you screen. Rest assured – we’ve received your project. Your coach will confirm receipt of your project within 24 hours.
As I am working through selecting and aligning standards, I need to confirm something. My state is in the middle of creating new arts standards that align with what we are learning and discussing. The second draft is available for us teachers to review and comment on. Should I align with these new standards (which actually meet the new requirements) or do I need to use the current standards that are currently in place and approved? It is the goal of the state to have these new standards complete for the 2019-20 school year or the one after this upcoming one.
Hey Jennifer, this is a great question for your coach. I do hope you’ll review and comment on those standards!
Yes! I am in the mindset of “build it and they will come” so if you know these new standards are coming down the pike, then hop on that train early so when they are finally made “official” and everyone has to use them you have a head start…that might also make it more enticing to collaborate with you because you are using the new standards! Chances are the new standards are not drastically different from the current ones, just updated.
I attended Ag in the Classroom this summer, and some of the things we did were awesomely connected (though they didn’t realize it). I see how I can make the connection intentional; the same is true with some other programs I’ve done. Could I use some of that if I am giving credit where credit is due?
Yes Ameerah! The rubric that I sent out on Monday shows you some percentages of original ideas to shoot for, and additional things that you use can be cited! That’s awesome that you made those connections!!
The deed is done! I will not go back and look at this work until I hear back from my coach because I know if I pulled it up right now I would find no fewer than three misspelled words. Ahhhh! This was a great project. I learned a lot in so many ways! Grateful for a little breathing space. :-)
Ahh, that feels good, doesn’t it? Breathe and relax, Karen!
